Conversation Hearts is inspired by the pastel sugar hearts with witty sayings that are ubiquitous on Valentines Day. Unlike the prepared messages of its candied cousins, each heart is customizable to communicate a personally crafted message from the sender. The sender can choose to input text, images, animations, audio, etc. to assign to a unique, abstract barcode marked on each conversation heart. The receiver of the boxed Conversation Hearts then unveils the secret messages by having the heart read by a sensor, such as a webcam.
Conversation Hearts is a Valentine for the digital age and creates an element of surprise and interaction between people, the digital world, and the artifact. The next phase of this exploration is to fabricate the hearts out of edible chocolate, thus completing the Valentine experience by affording the act to dispose the secret message with the idea to “eat after reading.”
